Chairman of the World Congress working group on "Endoscopic disinfection", Sydney, 1990. Chairman of the World Congress working group on "Surveillance of pre-malignant lesions of the gastrointestinal tract", Los Angeles, 1994. A member of the "Management of dyspepsia" working group, Vienna, 1998. And a member of the Scientific Committee of the United European Gastroenterology Federation 1997-1999. Served on the Council of the Royal College of Physicians, past-Vice President (Endoscopy) of the British Society of Gastroenterology. Vice President of the European Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy and President-Elect of the British Society of Gastroenterology, 2000 AD.
Research Interests
Intestinal permeability, ERCP, the disinfection of endoscopic equipment and inflammatory bowel disease. His interest in diseases of the stomach is long standing. His major recent contributions have been in the field of peptic ulcer, dyspepsia, Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric cancer.
He has published over 270 papers in peer reviewed journals.
